James Tannock Mackelvie - The Myth and the Man
JAMES TANNOCK MACKELVIE
THE MYTH AND THE MAN
Join the Mackelvie Trustees and Mackelvie Society members for an inspiring lecture by Mary Kisler, Curator Emerita, Auckland Art Gallery, held online via ZOOM. There will be a Q&A's session at the end of the lecture.
We know the basic facts about James Mackelvie’s relationship with Auckland. But who was this feisty Scot really, and why did he spend the fortune he made in New Zealand acquiring an eclectic collection for the benefit of the burgeoning town which had been his home for only six years? His collection mirrored the cabinets of curiosity built up by 17th century aristocrats on the Grand Tour, but his generosity matched the great 19th century British philanthropists of his day.
Monday 3rd August
