Mackelvie Society DECEMBER NEWSLETTER

Dear Mackelvie Society members and supporters,

Since the launch event on 30th October last year, we’ve welcomed many members to the Mackelvie Society and we are grateful for the generosity of their support.

Together we have managed to hold some memorable events, despite the challenges we all faced this year with COVID-19. Thanks to Georgia Prince (Principal Curator Rare Books) we had the opportunity to get up close to the Owen Jones’ Grammar of Ornament and the Great Design Encyclopedias, Auckland Central Library. At the Auckland Art Gallery Curators Dr Sophie Matthiesson and Emma Jameson treated us to a Morning in an Enchanted World. A morning tea in the Members Lounge followed by an exhibition tour.

During lockdown we appreciated the ability to connect with each other, thanks to the insightful lectures by Mary Kisler (Curator Emerita, Auckland Art Gallery) James Tannock Mackelvie – The Myth and the Man and Grace Lai (Historian and Curator, Auckland Museum) Netsuke: Capturing the Collective (and Collecting) Imagination.

Thanks very much to our members and guests who attended it was great to have your company both online and offline. We are now delighted to launch our 2021 programme of events and opportunities for Mackelvie Society Members.

With this programme of events, we would like to encourage our current members to renew their membership for 2021. We are also warmly inviting new members to join. We hope you will enjoy the opportunity to meet others with a shared interest in learning about the arts through the unique and memorable experiences we offer, as well as engaging with artists and patrons throughout the year. A Mackelvie Society Membership consists of three donation levels; Donor $1000, Patron $2,500 and Benefactor $5000+.

THE MACKELVIE SOCIETY AND ITS MEMBERS ENRICH THE COLLECTION BY:

  • Supporting the preservation and enhancement of the Mackelvie Collection

  • Keeping the Mackelvie Collection alive and growing though the acquisition fund

  • Raising awareness of the Mackelvie Collection as an Auckland “treasure” and fulfilling Mackelvie’s wishes for the collection to be a “teaching collection” for New Zealand

The collection’s depth and value is also enhanced by gifts, bequests and patronage.

We wish you all the very best for the festive season and look forward to seeing you in the new year.
