NETSUKE: CAPTURING THE COLLECTIVE (AND COLLECTING) IMAGINATION

NETSUKE: CAPTURING THE COLLECTIVE (AND COLLECTING) IMAGINATION

A MACKELVIE SOCIETY ONLINE LECTURE BY GRACE LAI

Thank you to all those members who supported the Zoom lecture on Monday evening, 31st August. We are appreciative of Grace Lai (historian and Curator at the Auckland Museum) taking us through the art and history of Netsuke,

When Japan opened its doors to the world, netsuke captured the imagination of collectors across Europe and the United States. These miniature carvings were small enough to hold within the palm of your hand, and range from realistic representations of the world to flights of fancies that live only in myths and legends. However, before the collecting frenzy of the mid-19th century, netsuke were an essential part of everyday dress in Edo period Japan.

Here is a link to the lecture which can be watched in full.
